Notification Bell
The notification bell is BreachSpider's in-app notification center. It displays real-time notifications for events across your environments without requiring external integrations.
Location
The bell icon is located in the top right corner of the BreachSpider interface, next to your account name. A red badge on the bell shows the count of unread notifications.
Viewing Notifications
Click the bell to open a dropdown panel showing your latest notifications. Each notification shows:
- Icon: A color-coded icon indicating the notification type.
- Title: A brief description of the event.
- Time ago: How long ago the event occurred (e.g., "3 minutes ago", "2 hours ago").
- Unread indicator: A dot or highlight for unread notifications.
Click a notification to:
- Mark it as read.
- Navigate to the relevant page (CVE detail, report, ticket, etc.).

Managing Notifications
Mark All Read: Click the Mark All Read button at the top of the notification panel to clear the badge count without clicking each notification individually.
Auto-dismiss: Notifications automatically disappear from the panel after 30 days. They are not permanently stored in the bell -- the audit log is the permanent record.
Notification count: The badge shows up to 99+ unread notifications. If the count is consistently high, consider configuring external alert integrations (Teams, Slack, email) so you are not relying solely on the bell for awareness.
Push Notifications (PWA)
When using BreachSpider as a Progressive Web App (installed on your home screen or desktop), the notification bell is supplemented by push notifications:
- Push notifications deliver instantly to your device, even when the app is not open.
- The notification appears in your device's notification tray with a preview of the event.
- Tapping the notification opens BreachSpider and navigates to the relevant page.
Push notifications must be enabled in your device settings. See the PWA Installation guide for setup instructions.
Polling and Refresh
The notification bell polls for new notifications every 60 seconds while BreachSpider is open in your browser or PWA. New notifications appear automatically without refreshing the page.
On the PWA, push notifications deliver instantly when enabled, bypassing the 60-second polling interval.
Notification Preferences
Navigate to Account > Notifications to manage which events generate in-app notifications:
- Toggle each event type on or off.
- Set digest preferences for email notifications (real-time, daily, weekly, off).
- In-app notifications (bell) and email notifications are controlled independently.
You can disable bell notifications for low-priority events while keeping email or Teams/Slack alerts active for the same events, or vice versa.
Best Practices
Use the bell for real-time awareness during active sessions. When you are working in BreachSpider, the bell provides immediate notification of new events without switching to another application.
Do not rely on the bell as your only alert channel. The bell only works when BreachSpider is open (or when push notifications are enabled on the PWA). For critical events like KEV matches, configure external integrations (email, Teams, Slack) as the primary alert channel.
Clear notifications regularly. A consistently high unread count means you are not reviewing events. Either configure more specific alert rules to reduce volume, or schedule regular review time.
