Executive Summary

CVE-2026-76459 is an out-of-bounds write condition (CWE-787) in Cisco NX-OS carrying a CVSS score of 9.8, meaning crafted input can corrupt memory beyond allocated boundaries on affected switches. Where NX-OS devices form the aggregation or core layer of a plant, substation, or pipeline control network, successful exploitation can degrade or seize the switching fabric that carries process traffic, with direct consequences for availability of control and safety communications.

Technical Exposure Breakdown

The vulnerability was surfaced through an internal Cisco security review and is grouped under CWE-787, out-of-bounds write. An out-of-bounds write occurs when software writes data past the end or before the beginning of an intended buffer. The practical outcomes range from memory corruption and process crash to, in the worst case, arbitrary code execution on the control plane of the device.

The 9.8 score in the grounding data indicates the worst-case profile: network-reachable, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and full impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The grounding data does not specify affected NX-OS versions, fixed releases, or the exact affected feature or daemon, so treat all platform-specific assumptions as unverified until a confirmed advisory and fixed-version list are available.

For OT teams the important attribute is reachability. NX-OS runs the Nexus switching line that frequently sits at the distribution and core of industrial networks, interconnecting process control VLANs, historian traffic, and management segments. A control-plane memory corruption on that hardware does not require touching a PLC or RTU to cause process impact. It only requires reaching the switch management or control-plane processing path.

OT Impact and Compliance Risk

The physical failure modes depend on where the switch sits. Loss of the switching fabric severs supervisory links between operator workstations, SCADA servers, and field controllers. A process already in a stable state may continue to run open-loop, but the operators lose visibility and the ability to issue commands, which is itself a safety event in most operating philosophies. If the device supports inter-VLAN routing between control zones, a code-execution outcome provides a pivot across the segmentation boundary that the architecture was built to enforce.

Compliance exposure is concrete. Under IEC 62443 this is a failure of zone and conduit integrity, since a shared network device bridging multiple zones becomes a single point of compromise. For NERC CIP registered entities, a Nexus device in a high or medium impact BES Cyber System environment falls under CIP-007 patch management and CIP-010 configuration monitoring timelines, which start running on vendor advisory availability. Pipeline operators under TSA SD-02C must account for this in their network segmentation and critical cyber system patch-management processes. Water and wastewater utilities subject to AWIA 2018 risk and resilience obligations should treat shared network infrastructure as in-scope critical assets.

Compensating Controls

Do not run an active scan to confirm exposure on a live control network. Active probing of switching and control-plane services can trigger the very memory-corruption condition you are trying to measure, and can disrupt or reset production devices. Inventory affected hardware from passive sources and configuration records instead.

When Cisco publishes a confirmed advisory with fixed releases, schedule the update through standard OT change-management windows after validation, not as an emergency live-network push.

BreachSpider Intel

BreachSpider tracks CVE-2026-76459 and advisory revisions across industrial automation and network infrastructure vendors so OT teams can see affected-product and fix-status changes without active scanning of production networks.
