Executive Summary

CVE-2026-89200 is a SQL injection flaw in RUGGEDCOM CROSSBOW (all versions below V6.0) where the Name and Value fields for custom file labels are not validated or sanitized, allowing an authenticated attacker with administrative privileges to run arbitrary SQL commands against the underlying database. Because CROSSBOW functions as a centralized secure access management platform for substation and remote OT assets, corruption or exfiltration of that database directly undermines the trust boundary controlling who reaches field devices.

Technical Exposure Breakdown

CROSSBOW brokers authenticated and audited connections to intelligent electronic devices, relays, RTUs, and other assets that typically have no native access control of their own. The platform stores credentials, device inventory, access policy, and session audit records in a backend database. This is the asset CVE-2026-89200 puts at risk.

The specific weakness is improper input handling in the Name and Value fields used for custom file labels. User-supplied content in those fields is passed into a database query without proper sanitization. An attacker who can submit crafted strings into those fields can break out of the intended data context and execute arbitrary SQL. The practical consequences of SQL injection in a management database include reading arbitrary records, modifying or deleting rows, and in some configurations escalating toward broader control of the database host.

The precondition is administrative access. That raises the bar, and it keeps this from being a pre-authentication network takeover. It does not make the finding low priority. In OT environments administrative credentials for access management platforms are shared, reused, or held by contractors more often than most asset owners want to admit. An administrator account compromised through phishing, a reused password, or an insider becomes the launch point for data manipulation that a normal admin session would not otherwise permit. The CVSS score is 6.7. Treat the score as a floor, not a verdict, because the business impact is tied to what the database governs rather than to the raw mechanics of the injection.

OT Impact and Compliance Risk

The physical risk here is indirect but real. CROSSBOW is the gate in front of devices that trip breakers, protect lines, and control substation logic. An attacker who can rewrite access policy or audit records in the database can grant themselves standing access to protection and control assets, suppress the evidence of that access, or deny legitimate operators their connection path during an event. None of that trips a relay by itself. All of it degrades the operator's ability to control and observe the system when it matters.

For NERC CIP registered entities, a platform of this type commonly sits inside the Electronic Security Perimeter and supports Interactive Remote Access under CIP-005, with access management and logging obligations under CIP-004 and CIP-007. A flaw that can alter the access control database or tamper with audit records touches each of those directly. Under IEC 62443 this maps to failures in the identification and authentication control and the data integrity requirements. Utilities operating under TSA pipeline directives should map this to their access control and logging requirements under SD-02C, and water systems carrying the same access architecture should fold it into AWIA access control reviews.

Compensating Controls

Patch status is not confirmed in our source data, so plan for an interval where you are exposed and cannot remediate. Do not active scan the CROSSBOW host or the devices behind it to confirm exposure. Aggressive probing of ICS management platforms and the field devices they front can lock sessions or brick components, and this vulnerability requires authenticated access rather than an unauthenticated banner you need to fingerprint.

Validate any vendor fix in a staging environment before promotion to production, and schedule the change inside a planned maintenance window.
