A vulnerability has been identified in SIMATIC CN 4100 (All versions < V3.0). The affected device contains hard coded password which is used for the privileged system user `root` and for the boot loader `GRUB` by default . An attacker who manages to crack the password hash gains root access to the device.
Source: NIST NVD / MITRE CVE Database
The vulnerability allows an attacker to exploit hard-coded credentials for the root user and GRUB bootloader. If an attacker gains access to the password hash, they can use it to obtain root access to the device, leading to complete control over the system. This can result in unauthorized modifications, data exfiltration, and potential disruption of operations.

Implement strong access controls and monitor for unauthorized access attempts. Regularly update and patch systems to mitigate known vulnerabilities.
No reliable network detection signature exists for this vulnerability class — apply the compensating controls above and the vendor patch. SAGE only publishes a network rule when a concrete on-the-wire signature can be grounded in the advisory.
This CVE violates CIP-007-R2 as it involves a vulnerability that could allow unauthorized access to critical cyber assets, compromising their security and reliability.
This CVE maps to SR 7.6 because it involves a hard-coded password, which is a known security risk that can lead to unauthorized access and control of the device, violating secure configuration practices.
Virtual patch generated by CITED Relevance SAGE. Validate in isolated environment before production deployment. Compensating control only - does not replace vendor patch.
